Cold Weather Isn’t the Problem — Friction Is
In my neck of the woods, over here on the east coast, we are looking at temps dropping about 15-30 degrees below normal this weekend. What about in your area?
When it gets cold outside, motivation takes the blame.
“I just don’t feel like it.”
“It’s too cold to go out.”
“I’ll start again when the weather improves.”
But here’s the truth:
Cold weather isn’t the problem. Friction is.
Friction looks like:
- Having to drive to the gym
- Needing special clothes just to get started
- Feeling stiff before you even move
- Turning workouts into a complicated production
When friction is high, consistency disappears.
The solution isn’t more motivation.
The solution is lowering the bar.
Winter wins look like:
- 10–20 minutes at home
- Dumbbells in the corner
- Bodyweight movements
- Mobility work in front of the TV
That still counts.
That still builds momentum.
That still reinforces who you are.
You don’t lose progress in winter.
You lose it by waiting for perfect conditions.
Frankly, my setup is in my basement—and it’s frigid down there. For me, it makes more sense to go to the gym where it’s warm and I can just get to work.
Winter is not the season to push harder.
It’s the season to maintain intelligently—
so you’re ready when spring shows up.
